First Arab woman on the European Tour sees Saudi event as step forward
Maha Haddioui, the first and only Arab woman on the Ladies European Tour (LET) on Tuesday (November 10) said the focus should be on positive changes in Saudi Arabia as the Middle Eastern country prepares to host it's first LET event at the Royal Greens Golf & Country Club this week.
The Moroccan also said she is excited to "represent my region in my region" as she competes in a field of 108 LET professionals for one of the tour's biggest prizes, $1 million U.S. dollars.
When asked during a zoom news conference on Tuesday if it was time for the world to focus on improvements Saudi Arabia has a made instead of "continually bringing up a lot of the human rights and other things," Haddioui said, yes.
"You can always, no matter where you go in the world, you can decide to look at the flaws or you can decide to look at what's getting better, what's improving. And usually, by looking at what's improving, this is where you keep improving," she said.
At the same time, Haddioui also said she was grateful for the opportunities she has had access to, including studying in the United States, that led to her being a professional golfer.
"You don't really imagine what you can't have until you don't really have it. I'm very grateful for those opportunities and obviously my life would have been a lot different if I didn't have those opportunities," she said.
The 72-hole stroke play tournament will be played at the Royal Greens in King Abdullah Economic City from November 12-15th and will feature some of the biggest names in the women's field including Charley Hull, Georgia Hall, Anna Nordqvist, Anne Van Dam, Amy Boulden, Camilla Lennarth and Dame Laura Davies.
Subsequently, the Saudi Ladies Team International will be held from the 17-19th of November.
